A true conservationist is a man who knows that
the world is not given by his fathers, but borrowed from his
children.
~ John James Audubon, 1785 - 1851
Civilization has always taken the environment for granted, never
thinking about precious resources until the last one can be seen at
the edge of a clearing or dry bed. Humans panic at the thought
of the last drop of clean water, the last tilling of fertile soil,
the last flower to cure a disease, the last tree that provides the
food for the last bird of its species - but not till that last drop,
morsel, or log is gone.
Our world is not in danger of eternally dying, but humanity is.
Slowly exhausting every precious resource needed to survive, we need
to wake up and realize the problem is apathy. Each one of us
can make a difference, starting at this very moment, to just be
aware of our behavior, our resources, and our everyday lifestyle
habits.
We abuse land because we regard it as a
commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to
which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.
~ Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac
