In 1914, in an effort to educate the rural farmer and his family,
the U.S. government passed the Smith-Lever Act which established a
national system of cooperative extension between the
land-grant colleges and the USDA with the twin purposes of
increasing farm productivity and improving rural life The
Smith-Lever Act sought to "..aid in diffusing among the
people of the United States useful and practical information on
subjects relating to agriculture and home economics, and to
encourage the application of the same..."
Funding for Cooperative Extension programs is shared by the
Federal, State and Local governments. The mission of
Cooperative Extension is to provide educational opportunities to all
people and to improve their economic well-being and the quality of
their lives.
